The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has introduced the world’s first 3-D printed abras for a trial run. These electric boats are capable of ferrying 20 passengers at a time and are designed to cut operation and maintenance costs by 30 percent. The trial phase is being closely monitored by the RTA to assess the performance of these innovative boats. The abra is equipped with an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries. The goal is to compare its performance with the current fibreglass abras.
The boat, built to retain its traditional identity, measures 11 metres in length and 3.1 metres in width. It was constructed with 3-D printing technology, which reduced manufacturing time by 90 percent. Additionally, it supports RTA’s environmental sustainability strategy for maritime transport. The project aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of marine transport in Dubai while preserving the traditional character of abras. Watch a video of the printing process and the trial run shared by Dubai Media Office for a closer look at this groundbreaking development.
Aside from the 3-D printed boat trial, RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek to enhance safety and security standards. With over 14 million passengers using these stations annually, the project involves improving four traditional abra stations. These upgrades include replacing all floating docks to ensure passenger safety, providing retail spaces, facilities for employees and operators, and adding bike racks. The waiting areas will be expanded, with priorities for seating and dedicated spaces for People of Determination. Sustainable, low-cost materials are being used to reduce annual maintenance costs by 10 percent.
The marine transport sector in Dubai has experienced significant growth with the completion of the Dubai Water Canal. As more tourist facilities and transport stations are developed along the canal, the sector is expected to expand even further. Abras and boats are becoming the preferred choice for many citizens, residents, and tourists to enjoy the scenic views of Dubai Creek, the Dubai Water Canal, and Dubai beaches. The RTA’s efforts in upgrading traditional abra stations and introducing innovative 3-D printed boats showcase the commitment to enhancing the maritime transport infrastructure in the city.
By utilizing advanced technology and sustainable practices, the RTA is not only improving the efficiency and safety of marine transport but also reducing maintenance costs and promoting environmental sustainability. The introduction of 3-D printed boats and upgrades to traditional abra stations align with Dubai’s vision for a smart and sustainable city. As the marine transport sector continues to evolve and expand, residents and tourists can look forward to enhanced experiences and increased accessibility to Dubai’s iconic waterways.
