Falcons released back into their ideal habitats in the wild under the Sheikh Zayed Falcon Release Programme have been thriving. Established in 1995 by the late founding father, the programme has seen over 2,200 falcons released over the span of 30 years. These include Saker and Peregrine falcons that have been reintroduced into their natural environments in regions like Kazakhstan, Russia, China, Mongolia, and neighboring countries. The recent release of 63 falcons in migratory areas marks the 30th edition of the programme, showcasing the commitment to preserving and protecting these magnificent birds.
The rugged mountains and vast plains of the release areas provide an ideal habitat for the falcons to thrive, with abundant prey for them to feed on. The release was conducted under the supervision of the Forestry and Wildlife Committee in the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture. Efforts to protect falcons and other wildlife species of ecological, cultural, and historical importance continue to be at the forefront of conservation activities in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. These initiatives aim to increase opportunities for falcons to overcome threats to their survival and prosper in the wild, contributing to the sustainability of the historical heritage of falconry.
The tradition of releasing wild falcons after the hunting season was championed by Sheikh Zayed in his commitment to preserving the species and preventing their extinction. Scientific studies and research have been crucial in rehabilitating the falcons to adapt to the wild, ensuring their successful release and integration into their natural habitats. All falcons of the programme undergo thorough veterinary examinations and intensive training, with electronic chips implanted for identification and tracking purposes to monitor their survival, dispersal, and migration patterns.
President Sheikh Mohamed has implemented various initiatives to protect the environment and conserve vulnerable species like falcons. Projects such as reducing the risk of electrocution on electricity poles, creating artificial nests, and cooperative efforts with organizations like the Green Balkans and the Peregrine Fund aim to safeguard falcons and other birds of prey. Gratitude was expressed to the Kazakh authorities for their contribution in facilitating the implementation of the programme, enhancing Abu Dhabi’s efforts in preserving falcon species and promoting environmental sustainability.
Under the patronage of President Sheikh Mohamed and the follow-up of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Sheikh Zayed Falcon Release Programme continues its conservation efforts. Supervised by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) in partnership with the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) and Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH), the programme is supported by various entities to ensure the successful release and monitoring of falcons. The joint efforts of these organizations aim to protect biodiversity, preserve wild species, and promote environmental sustainability in the preservation of falcons and their habitats.
