The UAE Cybersecurity Council is in the process of developing three new policies to enhance the country’s cybersecurity. These policies focus on ‘cloud computing and data security’, ‘Internet of Things security’, and ‘cybersecurity operations centres’, and are expected to be issued by the end of 2024. Additionally, executive regulations for the ‘encryption’ law, which aims to secure data transmission in line with quantum systems, are also anticipated to be released before the end of the year. The Chairman of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, Dr Mohammed Hamad Al-Kuwaiti, highlighted the significance of these policies in improving the UAE’s position as a global hub for advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The implementation of these new policies comes in response to recent malicious cyberattacks targeting strategic sectors in the UAE, particularly the financial sector. These attacks aim to compromise national security or obtain financial information for illicit gains. Dr Al-Kuwaiti assured that the UAE’s cybersecurity system is equipped to repel and thwart such attacks, identify the hackers, and follow international standards in dealing with them. The evolving digital transformation in the UAE, affecting sectors such as health, energy, education, and aviation, has increased the demand for an advanced cybersecurity system to protect against potential cyber threats posed by AI solutions used by various entities.

As a leading example in cybersecurity systems, the UAE serves as a model for other countries globally looking to enhance their data security practices amid rapid technological advancements. Dr. Al-Kuwaiti emphasized the importance of safeguarding institutions from threats and breaches that could lead to data leaks, identity theft, intellectual property infringements, and breaches of critical infrastructure and security digital records. The development of these new policies demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to staying ahead of cyber threats and ensuring the protection of vital sectors from cyberattacks.

These policies are crucial for maintaining the UAE’s reputation as a secure digital environment and promoting confidence in the country’s cybersecurity capabilities. By focusing on key areas such as cloud security, IoT security, and encryption, the UAE aims to strengthen its defenses against cyber threats and reinforce its position as a global leader in cybersecurity. With the continuous evolution of technology and the increasing reliance on digital solutions in various sectors, the implementation of robust cybersecurity measures is essential to safeguard critical infrastructure and sensitive data from potential cyber threats. The UAE’s proactive approach to cybersecurity reflects its commitment to maintaining a secure digital ecosystem and protecting the interests of its citizens and businesses.
