The UAE midday break, a ban on working under direct sunlight and in open spaces from 12.30pm to 3pm, ended on Sunday, September 15th. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) announced the success of the initiative, with 99.9% compliance rate among companies and providing 6,000 rest stations for delivery service workers. Approximately 134,000 inspection visits were conducted, with only 51 violations recorded, showcasing companies’ commitment to their workers’ well-being.

The initiative, which started on June 15, aimed to establish a safe working environment adhering to occupational health and safety standards and protect workers from injuries caused by high temperatures. Mohsin Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at Mohre, highlighted the private sector’s role as a partner in the nation’s development and the positive impact of compliance on the work environment, productivity, and competitiveness of the labour market.

Private companies in the UAE exceeded mere regulation compliance by launching initiatives to mitigate heat stress risks for their workers. The initiative required companies to offer shaded areas, cooling equipment, water, hydration supplements, and first aid equipment during the Midday Break hours or authorized jobs. The success of the initiative reflects the awareness among companies and employers about the importance of adhering to regulations for a safe working environment.

The Ministry’s partnership-driven approach with the private sector has been integral to the success of the initiative, ensuring cooperation and compliance from companies across the UAE labour market. The commitment of companies to provide a safe working environment for their employees and mitigate heat stress risks demonstrates a proactive approach to protecting workers’ well-being during the summer months. The initiative’s positive impact on employee productivity and the overall competitiveness of the labour market is evident in the high compliance rate and minimal violations recorded.

The UAE midday break initiative has set a standard for ensuring the well-being of workers in high-temperature environments and under direct sunlight. The emphasis on safety measures, including shaded areas, cooling equipment, water, and hydration supplements, reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and health of all workers. The successful implementation of the initiative highlights the cooperation between the government, private sector, and workers in creating a safe and healthy work environment.

In conclusion, the end of the UAE midday break marks a successful initiative that prioritized the safety and well-being of workers during the summer months. With high compliance rates and minimal violations, the initiative has demonstrated the effectiveness of partnership-driven approaches in ensuring a safe working environment. The commitment of private companies to go beyond regulations and implement additional safety measures reflects a proactive approach to protecting workers’ health and productivity. As the UAE continues to prioritize occupational health and safety standards, workers can look forward to a safer and healthier working environment in the future.
