Saksham Uboweja, a 17-year-old student at GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai, has taken initiative to address the issue of cigarette butt pollution through his project Cygfix. Recognizing that cigarette butt litter often goes unnoticed, Saksham founded Cygfix to raise awareness, organize community cleanups, and implement innovative recycling strategies to tackle this environmental challenge.
During a walk in his Villanova neighborhood, Saksham noticed the accumulation of cigarette butts on every street corner, prompting him to take action. Despite their small size, cigarette butts pose a significant global environmental problem, with approximately 4.5 trillion butts littered worldwide. Many individuals overlook the impact of cigarette butt litter, as they are often perceived as biodegradable and harmless.
With the support of his parents, community members, and classmates, Saksham established Cygfix in August last year. His efforts initially focused on raising awareness among different groups, such as community helpers and school support staff, who were unaware of the issue. Additionally, Cygfix implements innovative recycling strategies by collecting and cleaning cigarette butts to send to eCycleX, a local organization specializing in cigarette butt recycling.
Moving forward, Saksham aims to expand Cygfix’s impact by eliminating cigarette butt litter from the environment and promoting a circular economy. Community involvement is essential to the success of Cygfix, as volunteers can participate through the website or social media. Smokers are encouraged to be mindful of proper disposal methods and join the initiative to support the cause.
As the new school year begins, Saksham is balancing his academic responsibilities with his environmental efforts, planning ahead to continue campaigns with adjusted schedules. Despite the challenges, Cygfix is committed to maintaining a steady flow of cigarette butts for recycling even when community drives are not organized. With a focus on awareness, community engagement, and recycling initiatives, Cygfix is making strides in addressing the issue of cigarette butt pollution and creating a greener future.
