Dealing with the loss of a pet can be a difficult and emotional process for pet owners as animals often become loyal companions throughout their lives. After the death of a pet, many owners may want to be near their pets or keep some remains. In Dubai, the question of burial comes up, but it is not permissible to bury animals in the country according to the Dubai Municipality. However, there might be a grey area if an owner buries the animal on their own property, although it is advised against due to the risk of diseases spreading and being a nuisance to neighbors in terms of hygiene.

In terms of the legal aspect, animals in the UAE are cremated rather than buried. There are several types of cremation options available to pet owners. Municipality disposal involves the pet being given to the municipality for mass cremation with other deceased animals. Pet owners who want to collect the ashes do not have this option. Shared cremation involves sending the animal to a second party for cremation, where multiple deceased pets are cremated together and owners can take part of the ashes with them. The cost of shared cremation depends on the weight of the pet, ranging from Dh700 to Dh1,500 for pets under 25kg.

Separate cremation is another option where pets are cremated alone, and owners have the choice of taking the remains with them. This option can cost anywhere from Dh2,300 to Dh2,700 for pets weighing up to 30kg. For pets weighing up to 40kg, but where the owner chooses not to take the remains home, the cost is usually half the price. It is against the law to transport deceased pets abroad for burial in most countries around the world, with no approval given for such transportation due to strict laws.

In unfortunate cases where pets need to be put down due to a tragic accident, incurable disease, or suffering due to old age, the euthanasia process is usually considered the most humane option. The process involves sedating the animal to prevent pain during euthanasia, followed by administering a drug to stop its heart from beating. The cost of euthanizing smaller animals like cats usually ranges from Dh400 to Dh500, including disposal by the municipality. Despite differing opinions among vets, many believe euthanasia is a more humane option than letting the animal suffer. Taking care of a pet’s remains after death can be a difficult decision for owners, but understanding the options available and considering the emotional well-being of the owner are crucial in dealing with the loss of a beloved pet.
