The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently experienced the hottest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to 49.4°C. This record-breaking heat coincided with the Eid Al Adha celebrations, where Muslims around the world observed one of the most significant festivals in Islam. The National Centre of Meteorology reported that the highest temperature was recorded in Sweihan, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, at 2:45 pm.
Despite the scorching temperatures, some parts of the country saw unexpected rain showers, and more rainfall is anticipated in the coming days as summer weather sets in. Earlier in June, heavy thunderstorms and hail hit certain regions, with meteorologists explaining that hail during summer is not uncommon. It typically occurs when surface temperatures are warm, but the upper atmosphere is cold enough to support ice formation.
Last year in August, the UAE experienced another extreme heatwave, reaching a peak temperature of 50.8°C in Owtaid, Al Dhafra Region, Abu Dhabi. In July 2023, temperatures surpassed the 50ºC mark for the first time, touching 50.1°C on consecutive days in Bada Dafas, Al Dhafra Region, Abu Dhabi. As the mercury continues to rise, it is crucial for residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the excessive heat.
Authorities are urging residents and citizens to safeguard their health by avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, applying sunscreen, and keeping their skin moisturized. Additionally, it is essential to be vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as weakness, dizziness, muscle cramps, headache, nausea, rapid pulse, and thirst. Maintaining physical well-being is crucial during these extreme weather conditions.
In addition to physical health concerns, residents are encouraged to prioritize their mental well-being during the summer months. Longer daylight hours, shorter nights, and high temperatures can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to symptoms of ‘summertime blues’ or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). To combat these mental health challenges, individuals are advised to take care of their emotional and psychological needs to ensure overall well-being.
As the UAE grapples with record-breaking heatwaves and unpredictable weather patterns, it is essential for residents to stay informed, take precautions to safeguard their health, and prioritize both their physical and mental well-being. By staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and being aware of heat-related symptoms, individuals can navigate the extreme temperatures with resilience and caution. Additionally, seeking support for mental health concerns and practicing self-care during the challenging summer months can contribute to a holistic approach to well-being in the face of nature’s unpredictable elements.
