Parents in Dubai are facing the challenge of rising school fees, but are still willing to invest in co-curricular activities (CCAs) for their children, with some spending up to Dh12,000 per term. While tuition fees are often seen as a financial burden, parents see the value in extracurricular activities (ECAs) and are willing to pay for them. The cost of these activities varies depending on whether they are pursued professionally or recreationally. These CCAs are seen as enhancing cognitive abilities, improving concentration, and teaching discipline, which can lead to better academic performance.

One example of a parent committed to a professional co-curricular activity is UAE citizen Malak AlFarsi, who is determined to help her 13-year-old daughter Lamia Tariq Malallah achieve success in rhythmic gymnastics. Lamia trains for four to six hours daily, aiming to reach the highest level in the sport. This dedication has already led to Lamia winning gold at a prestigious competition in Dubai. The expenses for professional CCAs like rhythmic gymnastics can range from Dh10,000 to Dh12,000 per term, highlighting the commitment required for such specialized sports.

In contrast, some parents opt for recreational co-curricular activities for their children. Indian expatriate Neha Bhagwat’s two sons are engaged in tennis, art, and football training, with the aim of holistic development. Bhagwat recognizes the skills that children can develop through these activities, such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. She invests Dh10,000 annually on their CCAs and emphasizes the importance of consistent focus on activities that align with the child’s interests to avoid wasting resources.

Another approach to ECAs is through school-offered activities during school hours for an additional fee. American expat Natalia Miranda’s son participates in ukulele classes at his school, which incurs an extra cost of Dh1,000 per term. While these classes are expensive, Miranda appreciates the variety of activities available in Dubai and the professionalism of the instructors. Additionally, extracurricular activities done outside school hours may require transportation arrangements, adding to the overall cost for parents.

Despite the financial commitment involved in supporting children’s co-curricular activities, parents like Malak AlFarsi and Neha Bhagwat recognize the long-term benefits for their children. These activities not only contribute to skill development and academic performance but also foster a sense of discipline and passion for children’s interests. By understanding the value of these activities and aligning them with their children’s passions, parents in Dubai are investing in their children’s holistic development and future success. Whether pursued professionally or recreationally, co-curricular activities play a vital role in shaping well-rounded individuals.
