Sharjah Civil Defence is set to introduce drone technology to combat fires in high-rise buildings in the emirate, beginning in 2025. The new technology aims to reduce firefighting time and achieve rapid response, transitioning from traditional methods to advanced ones. The drones have been successfully tested and can reach heights of 150 meters, equivalent to 40 floors, within seconds. Equipped with a 5,000-liter water tank, the drones can spray water up to 15 meters, aiding in firefighting efforts.
The drones can be fitted with thermal cameras to pinpoint the source and intensity of heat, enabling quick decision-making for the firefighting teams. Due to their small size, drones can be easily transported to sites with limited access and launched immediately, resulting in faster response times. In the first quarter of 2025, two drones will be deployed, with plans for performance improvements such as increasing the maximum height to 200 meters, equivalent to 60 floors, and adding voice evacuation instructions.
Brigadier Sami Al Naqbi highlighted the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of drones in firefighting activities, surpassing the current limitations of traditional firefighting equipment. In a previous fire incident, the utilization of drones could have potentially reduced firefighting duration from six hours to one hour, illustrating their potential to save lives and property.
