A global technology glitch caused chaos in airports, airlines, and various industries worldwide, resulting in the cancellation of 10 flights in the UAE over two days. Despite the widespread impact, UAE’s airlines and airports were among the least affected countries, with only a few flights being cancelled. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed minor impacts on operational processes due to the global technical outage, with minor delays in check-in processes for a limited number of flights. Dubai Airports swiftly resumed flight operations after a system outage affected check-in processes at Terminals 1 and 2. Globally, 104,000 flights were scheduled on July 20, with 1,848 cancelled by Friday afternoon UAE time, while 5,333 flights were cancelled on July 19.

Countries such as the US, Australia, India, Spain, Canada, Italy, the UK, and Germany were among the worst-hit during the two days of the global technology glitch. The Crowdstrike glitch affected US and other Western carriers, including Delta, United, American, Spirit, Alaska, Frontier, Hawaiian, Southwest, JetBlue, and Allegiant. Asian and European airlines were also impacted by the technical outage. UAE’s aviation sector experienced relatively minor disruptions compared to other parts of the world, highlighting the resilience and efficiency of the country’s airport and airline operations during challenging situations. The GCAA’s quick response and implementation of alternative systems helped mitigate the impact on flights in the UAE.

It is essential for passengers to stay updated with the latest news and developments regarding flight operations, especially during times of technological disruptions. Following news channels and official announcements from aviation authorities can provide valuable information on flight statuses and potential delays. The global technology glitch serves as a reminder of the critical role technology plays in the aviation industry and the need for robust backup systems and protocols to handle unexpected technical issues. The resilience of UAE’s airports and airlines in the face of the global outage showcases the industry’s preparedness and adaptability to navigate through challenges effectively.

As the aviation sector continues to evolve and embrace technological advancements, ensuring the reliability and security of systems is crucial to maintaining smooth operations and passenger satisfaction. Airlines and airports worldwide must invest in robust IT infrastructure, cybersecurity measures, and contingency plans to address potential disruptions and minimize the impact on travelers. Despite the challenges posed by the recent global technology glitch, the UAE’s aviation industry demonstrated its ability to respond swiftly and efficiently, underscoring its commitment to ensuring seamless travel experiences for passengers. By learning from such incidents and implementing necessary improvements, the aviation sector can enhance its resilience and preparedness for future disruptions.
