For 19-year-old Ethan Guo, flying is more than just a passion, it’s a mission. This young Asian-American pilot is using his love for aviation to raise funds for childhood cancer research and treatment. Guo is attempting to set a world record by becoming the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents in a small aircraft, with a goal of raising $1 million by visiting hospitals and meeting young patients in each country he lands in. He aims to use every opportunity to raise awareness about childhood cancer and the need to increase research efforts in finding prevention and treatment methods.
Guo’s journey has taken him to various countries across the globe, where he has seen the goodness in people everywhere and their desire to make the world a better place. Currently in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of his fundraiser, he plans to continue his journey to Doha, Qatar, and then Dubai. Guo has been overwhelmed by the hospitality and kindness he has received in Riyadh and looks forward to similar experiences in Dubai. His trip involves stopovers in nearly 60 countries over 150 days, covering more than 80,000km and spanning continents like Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Antarctica.
Flying a modified Cessna 182, Guo has made significant safety measures to ensure his well-being during the journey. He has removed rear seats to accommodate an additional fuel tank, enabling him to stay airborne for up to 17 hours at a stretch. With a satellite connection to his ground team and three emergency locator transmitters on board, Guo feels confident in handling the challenges of the journey. His passion for aviation started at 13, and by 17, he had already obtained his private pilot license with over 700 hours of flight time, making him well-equipped for this ambitious feat.
Guo’s mission to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research was inspired by his cousin’s battle with the disease. Witnessing his cousin fight blood cancer at age 18 sparked Guo’s determination to make a difference. It took him six years to convince his mother to allow him to pursue his solo journey around the world, but his father’s unwavering support helped him achieve his goal. Through this endeavor, Guo not only aims to set a world record but also hopes to leave a lasting impact in the fight against childhood cancer. With each stop on his journey, he connects with communities, hospitals, and patients to spread awareness about the cause and inspire others to join the fight.
Guo’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, passion, and altruism. By using his skills as a pilot to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research, he exemplifies the potential of young individuals to make a meaningful impact in the world. As he continues his record-setting journey, Guo’s story serves as an inspiration for others to pursue their dreams and make a positive difference in their communities. His resilience and dedication to the cause of childhood cancer research showcase the importance of individuals coming together to create change and improve the lives of those in need.
