Fatima Ismail Al-Sarayrah’s son was diagnosed with autism at birth, leading her into depression and denial due to the lack of awareness and understanding of autism. After struggling for eight years, Fatima decided to take charge and enrolled in a psychology program to gain the tools needed to communicate effectively with her son, Salem, who was on the severe autism spectrum.
Through applied behavior analysis and music therapy, Fatima saw remarkable progress in Salem, who went from being non-verbal to using music as a form of expression. Inspired by her journey, Fatima launched the “Bayan” initiative to support mothers of autistic children through writing therapy and psychological guidance to help them accept and understand their child’s diagnosis.
Despite her success, Fatima still faces societal misconceptions and stereotypes about autism, with many expecting all autistic individuals to either be geniuses or burdens. She urges for a broader understanding and acceptance of the diversity within the spectrum, highlighting that each child is unique with different abilities and challenges.
Fatima’s efforts have paid off as Salem, now 15, has made remarkable strides and earned certificates of appreciation for his progress and behavior. Fatima emphasizes the importance of early intervention and community support, stressing the need to focus on the strengths of each autistic child and provide them with the tools they need to thrive.
Recognized for her dedication, Fatima has received several awards, including an honorary doctorate in autistic creativity, and has become a source of hope and resilience for parents and families with autistic children. She believes that autism is not a barrier but a spectrum of potential waiting to be unlocked, and aims to empower others to embrace and support individuals with autism in their unique journey.
