In September 2016, the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed met Pope Francis at the Vatican to strengthen bilateral relations and promote shared humanitarian values of peace, security, stability, and tolerance. During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed presented the Pope with a photo book showcasing archaeological discoveries on Sir Bani Yas Island and the Carpet of Peace – an initiative supporting women in rural areas of Afghanistan. The UAE leader emphasized the importance of promoting peace and stability globally while appreciating the Pope’s efforts in combating intolerance and promoting dialogue.
Pope Francis praised the UAE’s efforts in promoting coexistence between different cultures and acknowledged the country’s humanitarian initiatives in education, healthcare, and sustainable development. Back in the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed’s visit was well-received by both Christians and Muslims, with leaders from both communities expressing their gratitude for the efforts towards promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and stability. The visit opened channels for cultural and civilizational exchange that are essential for humanity’s progress.
Less than three years after the meeting, Pope Francis made a historic visit to the UAE in February 2019, marking the first apostolic journey to the Arabian Peninsula by a Catholic leader. During his visit, Pope Francis signed the ‘Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together’ with the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyeb. The following day, the Pope held a mass at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, with close to 180,000 attendees from various nationalities and age groups.
The papal Mass in Abu Dhabi showcased peace and tolerance, with Muslim expats volunteering as Christians gathered to hear the mass. The event was a moment of joy, celebration, and cultural tolerance, highlighting the significance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation in promoting peaceful coexistence. Overall, the meeting and subsequent visits between Sheikh Mohamed and Pope Francis exemplify the commitment of the UAE and the Catholic Church towards fostering understanding, tolerance, and peace on a global scale.
