40 years ago, on July 19, 1984, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the late Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces made his first official visit to the UK, marking a historic moment in UAE-UK bilateral relations. During this meeting with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the UAE urged the UK’s support for Arab issues and peace initiatives in the Middle East, highlighting the importance of finding a comprehensive settlement for Middle East problems and the Palestinian right to self-determination.

The visit also involved discussions about the Iraq-Iran war and the impacts on regional stability and security. Both leaders emphasized the need for continued cooperation between the UAE and the UK to support peace efforts in the region. Prior to Sheikh Khalifa’s visit, Thatcher had made history by being the first sitting UK Prime Minister to visit the UAE in 1981, accompanied by her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher. During her visit, Thatcher was received by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and engaged in cultural activities in Dubai, further strengthening the ties between the two countries.

The series of official visits and meetings between the UAE and UK leaders served as pivotal moments in advancing cooperation and economic ties between the two nations. Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to the UAE in 1979 saw the inauguration of key infrastructure projects, including the desalination plant in Jebel Ali, Dubai International Trade & Exhibition Centre, and Jebel Ali Port. These visits underscored the commitment to enhancing collaboration and partnerships across various sectors.

In present times, President Sheikh Mohamed was among the first world leaders to congratulate Keir Starmer on his appointment as the new UK Prime Minister. During a phone conversation, President Sheikh Mohamed emphasized the importance of strengthening the historical and strategic relations between the UAE and UK, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation in diverse fields. These interactions between the leaders of the UAE and the UK continue to play a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and reinforcing the strong bond between the two nations.

The historical visits by UAE and UK leaders not only laid the foundation for strong diplomatic ties but also paved the way for enhanced economic cooperation and cultural exchange. The mutual commitment to supporting peace initiatives in the Middle East and addressing regional challenges has been a key priority for both nations. Through continued dialogue and collaboration, the UAE and UK are poised to further strengthen their partnership and work towards shared goals of peace, security, and prosperity in the region and beyond.

As the UAE commemorates the 40th anniversary of Sheikh Khalifa’s historic visit to the UK, it serves as a reminder of the enduring friendship and collaboration between the two countries. The shared vision of peace, stability, and progress continues to drive the UAE-UK relationship, reflecting a deep-rooted commitment to mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation. Moving forward, both nations are well-positioned to build on this legacy of cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
