In an effort to improve traffic flow in Dubai, authorities are planning to implement flexible working hours and remote work policies in both public and private sectors. The goal is to ease congestion on the roads, especially during peak hours. The specifics of how and when this policy will be rolled out are still unclear, but a survey was conducted earlier to gather insights on how flexible hours and remote working can help alleviate traffic issues.
The digital infrastructure in Dubai is already in place for remote work to be activated in emergencies. Following heavy rainfall in April and May, both private and government offices transitioned to online work, allowing employees to work from the comfort of their homes. This flexibility not only reduces traffic on the roads but also ensures continuity of work during unforeseen circumstances.
Additionally, the traffic flow plan approved by the Executive Council includes the development of priority public bus routes to significantly improve trip times by up to 59%. The plan also involves expanding Dubai’s network of dedicated bus lanes to over 20km by 2027. Furthermore, a policy will be introduced to encourage school students to use school transport, which is projected to improve traffic flow around schools by 13%.
The approval of these initiatives comes as Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed chaired the Executive Council meeting during the Arabian Travel Market. In addition to the traffic flow plan, the council also approved a policy to increase community participation in shaping policies, legislation, and government services. This move aims to enhance the quality of services by aligning them more closely with community needs and expectations through increased public engagement.
By encouraging community involvement in decision-making processes, the government seeks to benefit the quality of life for all Dubai residents. This collaborative approach between various stakeholders will help create a more inclusive and responsive government that addresses the diverse needs of the population. As Dubai continues to implement innovative solutions for traffic management and community engagement, the city is on track to further enhance its reputation as a forward-thinking and efficient urban hub.
