Union Coop, a popular Dubai-based retailer, has recently introduced ‘self-checkout’ as a part of its smart services, allowing consumers to complete their purchases without the need of any cashier. The retailer plans to expand this service to all of its branches in Dubai for the convenience of shoppers. Suhail Al Bastaki, Chief Community Relations Officer at Union Coop, stated that this initiative is part of the retailer’s strategy to provide multiple payment options and enhance shopping experiences for consumers.
The self-checkout service has been launched at the Union Coop branch in Etihad Mall and will gradually be introduced to other branches in Dubai based on its positive reception. Al Bastaki mentioned that self-checkout has revolutionized traditional shopping methods worldwide and allows customers to manage their payment process independently, without needing assistance from store employees. This service aims to save time by bypassing long queues at traditional checkout counters and offering a comfortable option for shoppers who value privacy during their purchases.
In addition to the self-checkout service, Union Coop has recently launched an initiative focused on digital and smart channels to enhance sustainability and reduce paper use in retail outlets. This initiative includes sending promotional campaigns via WhatsApp and Telegram, enabling customers to obtain the “Tamayaz” loyalty card digitally, and offering digital receipts instead of traditional paper ones. The retailer has also made digital invoices available through its app and QR codes, providing customers with an electronic receipt that can be printed if desired.
Al Bastaki emphasized that these digital and smart services will provide broader sustainability standards, expand smart service offerings, and streamline the shopping experience, making it quicker and more efficient for consumers. He also noted that the retail sector in Dubai is rapidly evolving to align with global smart service trends, supporting the expansion of these systems and services. This growth is driven by the increasing popularity of tourist activities and ongoing population growth, which further enhances the development of the retail sector in Dubai.
