A new sustainable waste management project has been launched in Hatta, Dubai, to divert waste from landfills. The project, titled ‘Outsourcing Waste Collection, Transportation, and Recycling Services’, is a collaboration between Dubai Municipality and Imdaad. Under this initiative, the Hatta landfill has been transformed into an advanced facility equipped to handle segregated waste. The facility covers an area of over 60,000 square metres and includes an administrative office and waste disposal zone. On average, 20 tonnes of municipal solid waste and 27 tonnes of agricultural waste are generated daily in Hatta, and the project aims to send this waste to treatment sites in Dubai and the Warsan waste-to-energy plant.

This waste management project is expected to benefit a total of 1,147 homes in Hatta. Dubai Municipality has distributed over 2,500 new waste storage and collection containers, each distinguished by color. Residents are encouraged to dispose of recyclable waste in green containers and non-recyclable waste in black containers. The containers also feature illustrations and instructions to help with waste segregation and raise public awareness about the importance of correctly segregating waste at the source. This initiative aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills in Hatta.

Dubai Municipality has been implementing outsourcing strategies for waste management services since 2012 under the name ‘My City .. My Environment’ in various subregions of the emirate, including Jumeirah, Al-Safa, Umm Suqim, Al Manarah, Al Barsha, Al Mizhar, Muhaisnah, and Nadd Al Hammar. More than 18,000 homes have already benefited from these projects, and the municipality has added 36,400 residential storage containers to promote better waste management practices. Additionally, the civic body has deployed 65 multi-utility machines and 300 field workers to further enhance waste management efforts and move towards a more sustainable society.

The Hatta waste management project signifies a significant step towards promoting sustainable waste management practices in Dubai. By transforming the Hatta landfill into an advanced facility and implementing waste segregation measures, the project aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and promote recycling and proper waste disposal. The collaboration between Dubai Municipality and Imdaad showcases the commitment of the authorities towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment for residents and future generations. Through initiatives like this, Dubai is setting an example for other cities to follow in adopting eco-friendly waste management practices and reducing their environmental impact.
