Voice phishing, or vishing, is becoming more prevalent in the UAE, with scammers impersonating authorities such as the police, the Ministry of Interior, or banks to extract personal information from unsuspecting residents. An alarming number of people have reported receiving calls or emails from these scammers, leading to financial loss and personal information compromise. One victim, Brejesh Rajan, fell victim to a vishing attack after receiving a call from a woman claiming to be from the UAE ICP during the renewal process of his Emirates ID. Despite the caller having all his official information and details, Rajan unknowingly provided sensitive information and lost money in the process.
Scammers are resorting to high-pressure tactics to coerce individuals into divulging information quickly. Victims have reported receiving aggressive calls demanding OTP confirmation or personal information. The scammers use fear tactics to expedite the process and prevent individuals from questioning the authenticity of the request. Even those who have not installed the UAE Pass app are being targeted, showcasing the sophistication and persistence of these fraudulent activities.
To combat vishing attacks, the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has assured the public of the UAE Pass’s high security standards. Users are advised to exercise caution when receiving OTPs or login requests related to the app and refrain from sharing sensitive details. Additionally, individuals should verify the authenticity of any requests to avoid falling prey to fraud attempts. The public is encouraged to stay informed and vigilant against scammers’ tactics to safeguard their personal information.
Organized criminals have various methods of acquiring personal data, including accessing information from the dark web, data leaks, and malware embedded in apps. They can clone legitimate domains, send phishing emails, and use SEO tactics to deceive users. Identity cloning and digital arrest scams are on the rise, where fraudsters use fear-mongering tactics to manipulate individuals into providing more information. Governments and digital advertising companies should collaborate to combat the proliferation of fraudulent activities.
To stay safe from vishing and other cyber threats, individuals should avoid installing software from unknown sources, be cautious of unknown calls or emails, update passwords regularly, and enable two-factor authentication. Refraining from sharing sensitive information and being wary of suspicious messages or links can prevent falling victim to scams. In case of sharing OTPs accidentally, individuals should contact service providers immediately to secure their accounts. It is crucial to stay informed with government advisories to protect against cyber threats and stay one step ahead of scammers.
