The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority have teamed up to release 80 endangered animals into the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve. This release includes a variety of species such as Rhim gazelles, Arabian oryx, mountain gazelles, Nubian ibex, lappet-faced vultures, Eurasian griffon vultures, and steppe eagles. These animals were rehabilitated at NCW care facilities before being released back into the wild.
Dr. Muhammad Qurban, CEO of NCW, explained that this release is part of a broader initiative to propagate endangered species, rehabilitate ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity. This initiative is in line with the Saudi Green Initiative and the National Environment Strategy. Dr. Qurban emphasized the importance of following international standards and practices in propagating endangered species and re-establishing them in their natural environments.
Andrew Zaloumis, CEO of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development, highlighted the significance of restoring wildlife and ecosystems within the reserve. The reserve covers just 1% of Saudi Arabia’s land area and 1.8% of its marine area but is home to more than 50% of the Kingdom’s species. Zaloumis mentioned that the partnership with NCW is crucial in re-establishing species that historically inhabited the reserve, contributing to biodiversity enhancement and supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives.
The National Center for Wildlife Development has been dedicated to wildlife protection, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration since its establishment. The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve, located in the western region near the Red Sea, spans 24,500 square kilometers and plays a vital role in connecting with major projects like NEOM, the Red Sea project, and AlUla. The reserve is one of eight royal reserves in Saudi Arabia and serves as a key area for preserving endangered species and enhancing biodiversity.
This collaboration between NCW and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority showcases a strong commitment to wildlife preservation and ecosystem restoration. By releasing endangered animals back into their natural habitats, the organizations are actively contributing to the protection and conservation of biodiversity in the region. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and the National Environment Strategy, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in wildlife management and habitat rehabilitation.
Moving forward, the continued efforts of NCW and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority will be essential in maintaining the health and vitality of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve. By working together to protect endangered species, rehabilitate ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity, these organizations are playing a crucial role in preserving Saudi Arabia’s natural heritage for future generations. Together, they are paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the Kingdom.
