According to a report by the Saudi Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority (Monsha’at), e-commerce revenues in the Kingdom are expected to reach SR260 billion by 2025, contributing 12 percent to the country’s GDP. The value of financing e-commerce projects in Saudi Arabia was SR1.6 billion in 2023, indicating a growing interest in this sector. The country has also been ranked 8th globally in e-commerce among the top 10 developing economies.
Furthermore, the report highlighted the increasing number of e-commerce businesses in Saudi Arabia, with around 26,300 holders of freelance documents registered with the Saudi Business Center in 2023. The number of holders of commercial registers documented by the center reached 16,500, showing the diverse range of e-commerce businesses in the Kingdom. The report also projected that the number of e-stores is expected to reach 42,900 in the next year, indicating a thriving e-commerce market.
In terms of logistics, the report mentioned that there were 191 shipping and delivery service providers in 2022, catering to the growing demand for online shopping. Additionally, the percentage of products imported from abroad in 2023 stood at 35.44 percent, highlighting the potential for international trade in the e-commerce sector. E-commerce in Saudi Arabia presents opportunities for growth and expansion, offering benefits such as overcoming market entry barriers, reducing operational costs, and reaching a wide customer base.
However, the report also pointed out some challenges facing establishments in the e-commerce sector, including competition with customers, limited resources, inventory management, and other obstacles that may hinder their growth and expansion. To address these challenges and promote the e-commerce sector, Monsha’at launched an awareness campaign titled “The market is your game” with the participation of various public and private sector entities. The campaign aims to encourage male and female entrepreneurs to enter e-commerce, educate them about the services provided by Monsha’at and other entities supporting investors in the e-commerce sector.
