After more than a decade, Syria and Saudi Arabia have resumed regular flights between the two countries. The Syrian Airlines flight arriving in Riyadh marked the beginning of this new chapter in their aviation relationship. Syrian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ayman Soussan, expressed his delight at the return of these flights, emphasizing the convenience it would bring to both Syrian and Saudi travelers. This development is seen as a significant step in the ongoing progress of relations between the two nations. The arrival of the first flight at King Khalid International Airport was met with celebration by the Riyadh Airports Company, with the presence of various Saudi officials from the air transport sector.

Ambassador Soussan highlighted the significance of the flight’s arrival in Riyadh, noting that it eliminated the need for indirect travel for those wishing to journey between Syria and Saudi Arabia. With the operation of one round-trip flight per week between Riyadh and Damascus, the two countries are paving the way for greater connectivity and ease of travel for their citizens. This move comes shortly after the historic arrival of pilgrims from Damascus to Jeddah, marking the first time such a flight had taken place in over 12 years. The Syrian Ministry of Transport is also considering expanding the destinations in Saudi Arabia served by Syrian Airlines, such as Jeddah and Dammam, based on market demand.

The resumption of flights between Syria and Saudi Arabia is not only a positive development for travelers but also a reflection of the improving relations between the two countries. The decision to establish regular flights signifies a renewed commitment to cooperation and connectivity in the region. Ambassador Soussan’s remarks about the joint agreement to operate weekly flights demonstrate a shared desire to enhance travel options for citizens of both nations. This move is expected to strengthen cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties between Syria and Saudi Arabia, opening up opportunities for further collaboration in various sectors.

The return of Syrian Airlines to Riyadh is a welcome development for Syrian expatriates living in Saudi Arabia, as well as Saudi nationals with interests in Syria. The direct flight route between Riyadh and Damascus will provide a more convenient and efficient travel option for individuals looking to visit friends and family or conduct business in either country. Additionally, the resumption of regular flights could potentially boost tourism and trade between Syria and Saudi Arabia, contributing to the economic growth of both nations. By enhancing accessibility and connectivity through air travel, the two countries are laying the groundwork for increased engagement and exchanges in the future.

The Syrian Ambassador’s statement about the mutual benefits of the resumption of flights highlights the positive impact it will have on both Syrian and Saudi citizens. With increased ease of travel and direct flight options, individuals from both countries will have greater flexibility in planning their trips and journeys. This development is particularly significant for Syrian expatriates living in Saudi Arabia, as they now have a more convenient way to visit their homeland and reconnect with their roots. The regular flights between Riyadh and Damascus also offer business travelers a streamlined and efficient mode of transportation for conducting meetings and negotiations in both countries.

As the aviation sector continues to recover from the disruptions caused by the global pandemic, the resumption of flights between Syria and Saudi Arabia is a promising step towards normalizing air travel in the region. The collaboration between the two countries to establish regular flight routes demonstrates a commitment to overcoming challenges and building stronger connections between their populations. With the potential for expanded flight options to additional Saudi airports in the future, Syrian Airlines is poised to play a key role in facilitating travel and trade between Syria and Saudi Arabia. This renewed aviation partnership sets a positive precedent for regional cooperation and mutual benefit in the Middle East.
