Saudi Arabia has experienced a noticeable decrease in dust storms as a result of the country’s environmental efforts through the Vision 2030 programs. The Executive Director of the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, Jamaan Saad Al-Qahtani, discussed this decline during a virtual seminar on the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms. The center is actively collaborating with regional countries to mitigate the effects of dust storms and work towards a sustainable future. Saudi Arabia has launched the Middle East Green Initiative to plant 50 billion trees and established regional centers focused on warning against dust storms, climate change, and cloud seeding as part of this initiative. Investment in research and technology is ongoing to understand sand storms better, develop solutions, and cooperate with regional and international partners to combat sand and dust storms.

Dust storms present a significant challenge to the Gulf region and the world, impacting public health, agriculture, transportation, and energy. Efforts and effective strategies are necessary to combat them and mitigate their impacts. During the seminar, participants discussed various programs and efforts aimed at combating dust and sand storms in the Gulf region. The importance of raising public awareness about the negative impacts of these storms on health and economic sectors was also highlighted. Saudi Arabia’s efforts in confronting dust and sand storms include the role of the Saudi Green Initiative in planting 10 billion trees across the Kingdom and the impact of natural reserves in preventing overgrazing and deforestation. The spread of vegetation has been further supported by successive rainy seasons.

The seminar brought together scientists from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey, and Iran, along with officials and experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The collaborative discussions aimed to share the latest scientific research and proposed solutions to combat dust storms and mitigate their impacts. Saudi Arabia’s proactive approach to addressing environmental issues and combating dust storms reflects the country’s commitment to sustainable development and achieving a greener future. The efforts are aligned with the Vision 2030 programs that focus on environmental conservation and sustainability.

Through the Middle East Green Initiative, Saudi Arabia is taking significant steps to plant trees, establish regional centers, and invest in research and technology to combat sand and dust storms. Regional collaboration is essential to address the challenges posed by dust storms effectively. The involvement of various countries in the Gulf region and international organizations demonstrates the global concern for combating environmental issues and mitigating their impacts. The seminar provided a platform for experts to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and work towards developing effective solutions to combat dust and sand storms.

As dust storms continue to pose a threat to public health, agriculture, transportation, and energy, it is imperative to implement comprehensive strategies to combat them. Saudi Arabia’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability is evident through its initiatives to combat dust storms and promote a greener future. By investing in research and technology, establishing regional centers, and collaborating with regional and international partners, Saudi Arabia is leading the way in addressing the challenges posed by dust storms. The ongoing efforts reflect a collective commitment to combatting environmental issues and working towards a sustainable future for the Gulf region and the world.
