Saudi Aramco recently announced the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading American technology firms, with the aim of advancing the development of potential lower-carbon energy solutions. The agreements were signed in the presence of Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy, and Jennifer Granholm, US Secretary of Energy.

The first agreement was with Aeroseal, following a successful trial of their technology in Saudi Arabia. Aramco plans to accelerate the deployment of Aeroseal’s technology across its building fleet and explore its commercial applications in gas pipelines. The partnership will also focus on joint testing of building ductwork and envelopes nationwide, and on localizing Aeroseal’s supply chain within Saudi Arabia.

The second MoU was with Spiritus, focusing on enhancing direct air capture technologies. Spiritus’ novel approach could revolutionize carbon removal by reducing energy requirements and using a proprietary sorbent material that potentially increases adsorption efficiency significantly. This collaboration aims to address the major cost challenges of current direct air capture methods while improving efficiency.

The third partnership involves Rondo, where Aramco plans to explore the deployment of heat batteries to reduce operating costs and support emissions reduction initiatives across its global facilities. Preliminary engineering studies are underway for an industrial-scale deployment of Rondo Heat Batteries, with potential future scaling.

Ali A. Al-Meshari, Senior Vice President of Technology, Oversight & Coordination at Aramco, highlighted the strategic importance of these collaborations. He stated that Aramco is committed to achieving net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its wholly-owned operated assets by 2050. He noted that the innovative technologies from Aeroseal, Spiritus, and Rondo not only hold promise for significant carbon reduction but also have the potential to be scaled globally, particularly in the Middle East.

In conclusion, the partnerships with Aeroseal, Spiritus, and Rondo mark significant progress in Saudi Aramco’s efforts to develop lower-carbon energy solutions. These collaborations demonstrate the company’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and embracing innovative technologies to achieve its sustainability goals. With the potential for global scalability, these partnerships have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the energy industry, particularly in the region of the Middle East.
