Saudi fashion designer Alia Al-Salmi has gained worldwide recognition for her designs showcased at the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony, which captured the essence of Saudi heritage with a modern twist. Al-Salmi’s creations resonated with a global audience, symbolizing elegance and cultural pride. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her vision of modern designs inspired by Saudi heritage while keeping up with international trends.

The costumes for the Saudi team at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony were adorned with traditional drawings and engravings that reflected Saudi Arabia’s ancient history. Al-Salmi’s creativity stood out among 128 designers, earning her the chance to design the Saudi Olympic mission’s costumes. The Saudi delegation donned traditional Saudi attire, with male athletes wearing the bisht and shemagh, and female athletes donning the abaya. These outfits featured intricate drawings and engravings that highlighted Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural identity.

Al-Salmi highlighted the cultural diversity within Saudi Arabia through her choice of patterns and designs for the Olympic team’s costumes. She incorporated elements from various regions, such as the Nashal dress from the Eastern Province, the Kurta from the Central Province, and head coverings from different regions across Saudi Arabia. The Nashal dress, known for its fine embroidery and gold decorations, symbolizes luxury and elegance, embodying Saudi traditions passed down through generations.

For the men’s outfit, Al-Salmi combined the traditional thobe and bisht, choosing a white color for uniformity. The bisht, made of wool or silk, signifies luxury and prestige in Saudi culture. The Saudi team’s attire during the parade of nations at the 33rd Olympic Games in Paris received praise from the international audience, with attendees applauding the athletes for their traditional outfits and cultural representation. Al-Salmi’s designs successfully showcased Saudi heritage on a global platform, introducing the world to the country’s rich culture and history.

Overall, Alia Al-Salmi’s designs for the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony celebrated Saudi heritage while incorporating modern elements, earning her widespread acclaim and recognition. Her ability to blend traditional Saudi attire with innovative touches showcased the country’s cultural diversity and rich history. Through her designs, Al-Salmi successfully conveyed Saudi Arabia’s pride, elegance, and cultural identity to a global audience, solidifying her reputation as a talented and visionary fashion designer.
