The United Nations has praised Qatar for its efforts in diplomacy and humanitarian work, citing the State as an example for other member states. Qatar’s hosting of UN conferences and its role in reaching a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas were highlighted by UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. He expressed gratitude on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for Qatar’s cooperation and support, including innovative partnerships like that with Qatar Airways. Dujarric emphasized the importance of cooperation between Qatar and the United Nations, noting that the State’s generosity should be emulated by other member states.
The 79th UNGA session will focus on the ‘Summit of the Future’, where proposals by the UN Secretary-General to redefine the structure of the United Nations and address issues like artificial intelligence will be discussed. Dujarric emphasized the need for member states to adapt the UN’s structure to the 21st century, given the significant increase in the number of member countries since the organization’s founding. Climate change is another key issue on the General Assembly’s agenda, with member states expected to discuss commitments and recommendations to address the challenges posed by climate change, which has significant impacts on life and the environment.
Illegal immigration was also touched upon by Dujarric, who highlighted the need for cooperation among countries of origin, transit, and destination to effectively manage migration flows. He noted that the problem lies not in immigration itself, but in how it is dealt with, particularly in combating criminal gangs and human traffickers. Dujarric stressed the importance of rebuilding trust in laws and the UN Charter to address ongoing conflicts globally, emphasizing the need for respect for the rule of law and ending impunity.
In discussing the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, Dujarric called for an immediate ceasefire and commended Qatar for its diplomatic efforts in bringing parties together. He noted Qatar’s successful track record in diplomacy, citing its role in facilitating discussions on Afghanistan and Gaza. Overall, the UN Spokesperson praised Qatar for its leadership in diplomacy and humanitarian work, stating that the State’s efforts should serve as an example to other member states in the multilateral world order.
