The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) recently celebrated the International University Sport Week (IUSW) for the third consecutive year with a variety of engaging sports events on campus. This initiative aimed to encourage students and staff to participate in team-based games and physical activities, promoting the importance of regular exercise for a healthy lifestyle.
The five-day event was strategically scheduled to coincide with the International Day of University Sport (IDUS), recognized by Unesco and the International University Sports Federation. UDST, which has been awarded Platinum status as a healthy campus, used the extended festivities to showcase its commitment to promoting sports for all and strengthening its connections within the global university sports network.
Dr. Salem Al Naemi, President of UDST, emphasized the importance of IUSW in creating a space for the University community and the public to come together, engage in physical activity, and have fun. He highlighted the role of sports in promoting positivity, performance, and collaboration in every culture. As a FISU Healthy Campus, UDST aims to continue bridging the gap between sports and academia to help future generations thrive through active and healthy lifestyles.
This year’s IUSW event drew over 1000 participants and was marked by inclusive and engaging activities. The Fun Olympics, featuring games like tug of war and the water bottle challenge, was a major highlight with participants representing their countries. The event concluded with the Global Champions Trophy presentation to the winning team and a special trophy for the most enthusiastic crowd.
The “Game of the Month” included a basketball match between the UDST Wolves and Stallion Hoopers, showcasing the University’s sports programs. FusionFit sessions and sports education classes were introduced throughout the week to promote the importance of physical activity. Friendly competitions in football, padel, volleyball, and futsal ensured everyone had something to enjoy during the week.
UDST’s competitive spirit extends beyond campus, with the Male Football Wolves currently competing in the 2nd Asian Universities Sports Federation Football Competition in China. The University is also gearing up to participate in the World InterUniversities Championship 2024 in Rome, further showcasing its dedication to sports excellence and global participation.
