The Heart Hospital in Doha, Qatar, operated by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), has recently increased its use of robotic technology in coronary artery bypass grafting (Robotic CABG) surgeries. The goal of these surgeries is to improve blood flow to the heart muscle in a less invasive and more precise way compared to traditional procedures. This advancement allows for quicker recovery times and helps reduce the risk of complications for patients undergoing these surgeries.

Under the guidance of a specialized surgical team led by Dr. Abdulwahid AlMulla, the Senior Consultant and Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Heart Hospital, these advanced surgical techniques are being implemented. The team includes Dr. Ali Kindawi, Dr. Mohamed Latif Wani, and Dr. Mohamed AlKahlout, who are all experts in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. These professionals work together to ensure that patients receive top-quality healthcare services in Qatar while staying up to date with cutting-edge global surgical advancements.

Dr. Al Mulla emphasized the importance of incorporating minimally invasive techniques and advanced technologies, such as robotics, into cardiothoracic surgeries to enhance patient experiences, speed up recovery times, and minimize complications. Patients are carefully selected based on their health conditions to ensure that they are suitable candidates for these procedures and to achieve the best possible outcomes. These advancements align with HMC’s Healthcare Strategy 2024-2030, the National Health Strategy 2024-2030, and Qatar’s National Vision 2030.

Dr. Mohamed AlKahlout discussed the significance of using robotics in coronary artery procedures, which involve making small incisions on the left side of the chest, rather than the traditional sternotomy. While some aspects of the surgery remain the same, such as using a heart-lung machine and temporarily stopping the heart, the use of robotic assistance leads to shorter recovery times and hospital stays compared to open-heart procedures. Over the years, Heart Hospital has evolved from performing limited single-artery bypass surgeries to more complex multi-artery procedures, showcasing its commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements.

In the past year, Heart Hospital successfully treated over 10 cases involving multiple bypasses, with plans to increase this number to 25 cases in the upcoming year. These multi-artery procedures are considered highly advanced and are only performed by a select number of specialized centers around the world, placing Heart Hospital among the leading institutions in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. This demonstrates the hospital’s dedication to providing patients in Qatar with world-class healthcare services and staying ahead of the curve in medical advancements.

With the integration of robotics into coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries, patients in Qatar can expect improved outcomes, faster recoveries, and reduced risks of complications. The expertise of the surgical team at Heart Hospital, led by Dr. Abdulwahid AlMulla, ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care and benefit from the latest advancements in cardiothoracic surgery. By expanding their use of robotic technology and performing increasingly complex procedures, Heart Hospital continues to solidify its position as a leader in the field of cardiovascular care in the region.
