The 40th meeting of the committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) senior municipal officials was recently held in Doha, Qatar, in preparation for the 27th meeting of the Committee of Their Excellencies Ministers concerned with municipal affairs in the Cooperation Council. Chaired by the Director of Doha Municipality, Mansour Ajran Al Buainain, the meeting aimed to unify efforts towards GCC action to meet the needs of the council members’ citizens. Al Buainain praised Oman’s exceptional presidency of the previous session and highlighted the continuous efforts to develop Qatari cities and improve the quality of life and services for the population.
The Director of Doha Municipality emphasized the exchange of expertise among various GCC cities to enhance joint Gulf municipal action. He commended the General Secretariat of the GCC for monitoring the implementation of decisions and recommendations to improve joint municipal action. HE Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs, Khalid bin Ali bin Salim Al Sunaidi, thanked Qatar for its continuous support in enhancing joint Gulf action. He praised the Ministry of Municipality for organizing the meeting and Gulf Municipal Week, highlighting the rapid achievements and development made in municipal work.
The meeting discussed various topics, including implementing GCC Supreme Council’s resolutions on strategic urban planning, urban environment, the Gulf Building Code, legislation, municipal oversight mechanisms, and contractor classification criteria. The Joint Gulf Municipal Action Plan (2024-2030) was also on the agenda, along with reviewing previous resolutions on Gulf Municipal Week, agreements with organizations specialized in municipal work, the GCC Municipal Award, and promoting GCC municipal action in regional and international forums.
HE Assistant Secretary-General Al Sunaidi emphasized the importance of learning from countries that have advanced in municipal affairs and keeping pace with their progress. He expressed hope for fruitful results and recommendations from the meeting’s discussions. The committee focused on enhancing joint efforts to improve municipal action and meet the needs of GCC citizens. The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration among GCC cities and advance urban development in the region.
