Qatar Museums, in partnership with the Ara Güler Museum in Turkey, is proud to present ‘In the Footsteps of Ara Güler: Exploring the Photographer’s Legacy’ exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha from August 9 to November 9, 2024. This exhibition showcases the remarkable work of renowned photographer and photojournalist Ara Güler, who is celebrated for his mastery of the lens and his dedication to capturing the essence of Turkey and its cultural heritage. Through Güler’s iconic images of Istanbul, archaeological discoveries, and insightful portraits of global personalities, visitors will gain a firsthand experience of his profound impact on the world of photography and his commitment to preserving cultural memory.
Born in Istanbul in 1928, Ara Güler is revered both nationally and internationally as a master of photojournalism and photography. With a career spanning 70 years, Güler’s work serves as a visual historical record of Turkey and beyond, reflecting the rich tapestry of modern Turkish history. ‘In the Footsteps of Ara Güler: Exploring the Photographer’s Legacy’ offers a comprehensive overview of Güler’s work, capturing the spirit of Istanbul’s residents and immortalizing historical landmarks through his unique perspective. The exhibition features 155 photographs, as well as correspondence, photographic equipment, cameras, and other memorabilia from the Ara Güler Archives and Research Center in Istanbul.
One of the focal points of the exhibition is ‘In Good Company,’ which showcases Güler’s portraits of leading writers, artists, politicians, philosophers, and other influential figures of his time. Many of these individuals were personal friends of Güler, adding a personal touch to his portraits. Highlights of the exhibition include a handmade book maquette titled ‘Seven Landmarks of the World,’ featuring portraits of iconic figures such as Pablo Picasso, Tennessee Williams, and Salvador Dalí. Additionally, the exhibition features a never-before-seen portrait of Fahrelnissa Zeid, accompanied by drawings by the artist from the collection of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
Sheika Maryam Al Thani, Exhibition Co-Curator, expressed her excitement about the collaboration between the Ara Güler Museum and Qatar Museums, stating that the exhibition creates a fascinating dialogue between Güler’s iconic photographs and objects from Qatar Museums’ extensive General Collection. This partnership not only allows for the sharing of knowledge and resources but also sheds new light on Ara Güler’s artistic legacy while showcasing the depth and diversity of Qatar Museums’ collections, which contain over 300,000 objects.
