Qatar recently participated in an Arab workshop focusing on the impact of current economic conditions on child labor in Arab countries. The workshop was organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in collaboration with the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND), and the Arab Labor Organization. Representatives from various national mechanisms concerned with childhood, ministries of labor, employers and workers organizations in Arab countries, as well as international, regional, and national organizations and experts, were in attendance.
The workshop aimed to examine the effects of the global economic crisis on the prevalence and nature of child labor in Arab countries, discussing topics such as child labor in the region, the relationship between poverty and child labor, sustainable development goals, and child labor in the context of the current economic crisis. Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab League, emphasized the importance of addressing child labor as a violation of children’s rights. The workshop builds on previous efforts by the League and its partners, including a 2019 study on child labor in Arab countries that serves as a guiding document for efforts to combat this issue in the region.
The workshop provided a platform for participants to share experiences and best practices in addressing child labor, with a focus on developing strategies to tackle the root causes of the problem. By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors and organizations, the workshop aimed to strengthen cooperation and coordination in the fight against child labor. It also highlighted the importance of providing children with access to education, social protection, and other support systems to prevent them from engaging in exploitative labor practices.
The involvement of the State of Qatar in this workshop showcases its commitment to addressing the issue of child labor and promoting the well-being of children in the region. Through active participation in such initiatives, Qatar demonstrates its dedication to upholding children’s rights and working towards the elimination of child labor. By engaging with other Arab countries, international partners, and experts, Qatar is able to contribute to a collective effort to combat child labor and create a safer and more sustainable future for all children in the Arab region.
In conclusion, the workshop on child labor in Arab countries serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness about the issue and mobilizing stakeholders to take concrete actions to address it. By analyzing the impact of economic conditions on child labor and discussing strategies for prevention, the workshop aims to make a meaningful contribution to the efforts to eliminate this harmful practice in the region. With the active involvement of Qatar and other Arab countries, as well as international partners and experts, there is hope for progress in the fight against child labor and the protection of children’s rights in the Arab world.
