Aboul-Gheit pointed out that the Arab region is home to an estimated 41.4 million migrants and refugees, with around 32.8 million originating from the region. The severity of challenges facing the Arab region has increased in the last two decades, impacting political, social, and economic aspects of life. Additionally, climate change has become a major driver of human mobility in the region, exacerbating existing challenges.
The Arab League is closely monitoring the difficulties faced by Arab immigrants abroad, including racist practices, discrimination, Islamophobia, and marginalization. Aboul-Gheit emphasized the need for the international community to address the root causes of migration and displacement, particularly in conflict-affected areas such as the Gaza Strip. He called for decisive measures to protect the Palestinian people and stop forced displacement and ethnic cleansing.
Aboul-Gheit stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between actors in the humanitarian and development fields to address negative structural factors that compel people to leave their country of origin. By linking migration and development, it is possible to create sustainable solutions that address the root causes of migration. The Arab League remains committed to addressing the challenges associated with migration in the region and working towards a safe, orderly, and regular migration system.
