Qatar Foundation recently hosted a ceremony to celebrate the participants and coaches of its Ability Friendly Programme, an initiative that provides inclusive sporting opportunities for individuals with different abilities. The event, which included 182 registered participants, aimed to raise awareness of the programme and highlight the importance of creating an inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued and supported. Mark Hughes, the Executive Director of Special Schools and SEN Services at Qatar Foundation, emphasized the significance of the programme in promoting independence, personal growth, confidence, and self-esteem among participants. He expressed pride in the achievements of the students and their ability to overcome challenges, highlighting their determination and resilience.
Maha Al Amri, the mother of 10-year-old Khaled Al Yafie, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and participates in the programme, shared her heartfelt sentiments about the event. She praised the efforts and dedication of the parents in supporting their children, emphasizing the importance of a supportive community that provides emotional support, advice, and shared experiences. Al Amri highlighted the impact of the programme on her son’s social skills and ability to interact with others, noting the positive changes she has observed since his enrollment in the swimming and football programmes. Similarly, Fayza Abdullah Mohammad, another parent, expressed gratitude for the benefits her daughter, Fatima, has gained from participating in the football-related activities, including the development of new skills and increased independence. She also emphasized the value of connecting with other parents and forming a supportive network that encourages and uplifts each other.
The ceremony also showcased the artistic talents of twelve young artists from the Ability Friendly Programme through an exhibition called “Colorful Dreams.” The participants’ drawings were printed on bags and books, demonstrating their creativity and providing a platform for them to share their artwork with the community.
