The State of Qatar is actively participating in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) currently taking place in Cali, Colombia, with Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie leading the Qatari delegation. In his address to the conference, Dr. Al Subaie highlighted Qatar’s continuous efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030. He emphasized Qatar’s dedication to balancing environmental protection with social and economic governance, supported by national environmental legislation and adherence to international environmental protocols.

Qatar’s commitment to upholding environmental agreements is evident through its active participation in the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Fair Benefit Sharing. Dr. Al Subaie pointed out that the country fulfills its obligations by implementing national initiatives and strategies focused on promoting biodiversity conservation for the benefit of current and future generations. Utilizing state-of-the-art scientific methods and strategic planning, Qatar is working towards enhancing biodiversity as outlined in the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030) as a key driver.

A crucial aspect of Qatar’s environmental goals is the final phase of achieving Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to protect 30 percent of the nation’s land and coastal areas and restore 30 percent of natural habitats by 2030. These targets are in line with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal 2030 Action Plan. Dr. Al Subaie highlighted the success of various biodiversity projects in Qatar that have contributed to safeguarding endangered species such as the dugong, whale shark, and other wildlife facing the risk of extinction.

Qatar’s dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation is rooted in its vision for a greener and healthier future. Through strategic planning and the implementation of national initiatives, the country is actively working towards protecting its natural resources and promoting biodiversity for the benefit of both current and future generations. The alignment with international environmental protocols underscores Qatar’s commitment to global efforts in preserving biodiversity and environmental stability, reflecting its role as a responsible participant in the global community.

The focus on cutting-edge scientific methods and national strategies underscores Qatar’s proactive approach to enhancing biodiversity and ensuring the protection of natural habitats. By setting ambitious targets for the conservation of land, coastal areas, and natural habitats, Qatar is demonstrating its commitment to long-term environmental sustainability and biodiversity preservation. The success of biodiversity projects in safeguarding endangered species indicates the effectiveness of Qatar’s efforts in promoting ecological balance and protecting wildlife facing extinction risks.

In conclusion, Qatar’s participation in the COP 16 conference showcases its dedication to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. Through a combination of national initiatives, adherence to international environmental protocols, and strategic planning, Qatar is working towards achieving its environmental goals and contributing to global efforts in preserving biodiversity. The country’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability underscores its role as a responsible steward of the environment and a leader in environmental conservation efforts.
