Qatar Airways is on the brink of finalizing an equity investment in an airline in southern Africa as part of its ongoing expansion efforts on the continent. This announcement was made by Qatar Airways Group CEO, Eng Badr Mohammed Al Meer, during a panel discussion at the Qatar Economic Forum. He revealed that the deal is in its final stages and is expected to be announced within the next two to three weeks. While the target of the equity stake investment was not disclosed, Al Meer highlighted that there are only two or three airlines to choose from in southern Africa.
With a strong presence in Africa, Qatar Airways currently serves more than 30 destinations on the continent and is looking to further enhance its network. Al Meer emphasized the importance of covering the whole continent and identified central and southern Africa as key regions for expansion. He pointed out that while the airline has been growing its network organically in the northern, western, and eastern parts of Africa, central Africa and southern Africa remain areas that require focused attention. This equity investment in southern Africa will help Qatar Airways establish a hub in the region, building on its successful partnership with RwandAir in Kigali.
By expanding its operations in central and southern Africa, Qatar Airways aims to improve connectivity within the continent and provide passengers with seamless travel options. Al Meer highlighted the strategic importance of Kigali as a hub for the airline and its partners, emphasizing the role of RwandAir in facilitating connections from other parts of Africa. This move aligns with Qatar Airways’ vision to offer comprehensive coverage across Africa and strengthen its position as a leading carrier in the region.
The airline’s expansion efforts in Africa are part of its broader strategy to enhance its global presence and offer passengers a wide range of travel options. By investing in strategic partnerships and developing key hubs in underserved regions, Qatar Airways is positioning itself for long-term growth and success. The upcoming equity investment in southern Africa reflects the airline’s commitment to expanding its reach and providing travelers with efficient and convenient travel solutions. As Qatar Airways continues to strengthen its foothold in Africa, passengers can expect more connectivity options and enhanced services on their journeys across the continent and beyond.
