Qatar is making significant investments in higher education to support the country’s economic diversification and provide skilled professionals for the labor market. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) has sent 4,500 Qatari students on scholarships abroad to study subjects like teaching, medicine, programming, engineering, and other specializations. These students will play a crucial role in filling the gaps in the labor market in the coming years.
Dr. Hareb Mohammed Al Jabri, the MoEHE’s Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education Affairs, highlighted the importance of the MoEHE Strategy, which aims to provide higher education opportunities for all segments of society, strengthen higher education infrastructure, and supply the private and government sectors with skilled national competencies. Qatar currently has 33 higher education institutions offering a wide range of diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs, as well as vocational training programs.
The scholarship program requires each student to complete eight courses during their time abroad, with a focus on both general skills and specialized training. In addition to sending Qatari students abroad, the MoEHE is also focusing on attracting international students to study in Qatar through the Learn in Qatar project. This initiative is part of the country’s efforts to further enhance its economic diversification by increasing the presence of foreign students in Qatari higher education institutions.
The scholarships provided by the MoEHE cover a variety of fields, including teaching, medicine, programming, engineering, and other specialized areas. These scholarships aim to equip Qatari students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their chosen fields and contribute to the country’s economic growth. By investing in higher education, Qatar is laying the foundation for a skilled workforce that can drive innovation and development in key sectors of the economy.
The MoEHE Strategy, “Igniting the Spark of Learning,” emphasizes the importance of providing higher education opportunities for all segments of society, including Qataris, residents, and people with disabilities. By investing in higher education infrastructure and programs, Qatar is working to ensure that its workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to support the country’s economic diversification efforts and meet the demands of the labor market.
In conclusion, Qatar’s investment in higher education is a crucial step towards building a skilled workforce that can drive economic growth and development. By sending Qatari students abroad on scholarships and attracting international students to study in Qatar, the country is taking proactive steps to ensure that its workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a rapidly changing global economy. With a focus on providing opportunities for all segments of society and supporting the private and government sectors with skilled national competencies, Qatar is positioning itself as a leader in higher education and economic diversification.
