The ninth Souq Waqif Local Dates Exhibition for the year 2024 is set to open on July 23, 2024 in Doha, Qatar, with over 100 specialized farms participating in the 12-day event. Organized by Souq Waqif in collaboration with the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality, the exhibition aims to support and promote local date production as part of Qatar’s efforts to achieve food security and enhance the agricultural sector.

The exhibition will take place in the eastern square of Souq Waqif and will run until August 3, 2024, attracting a wide range of local farms offering various date products. Director of Souq Waqif, Mohammed Abdullah Al-Salem, mentioned that the venue is fully prepared with necessary facilities, including an air-conditioned tent that will be open to the public from 4pm to 9pm daily, with extended hours until 10pm on Fridays. The market is committed to organizing this annual event to support local farms and promote the heritage and tourism aspect of Souq Waqif as a popular destination in Doha.

The Souq Waqif Dates Exhibition has gained a strong reputation over the years, with the previous edition seeing sales of 220 tonnes. This year, it is anticipated that the sales will surpass this number due to the high quality of Qatari dates. Yousef Khaled Al-Khulaifi, Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department, highlighted that the exhibition aims to showcase different types of dates and encourage local farm owners to sell their products directly to the public. The organizing committee has outlined specific requirements for participation, such as ensuring the dates are of good quality, clean, and free from pests and impurities.

In addition to promoting local date production, the exhibition serves as a platform for educating the public about the importance of date palms and their various products. The Agricultural Affairs Department will conduct examinations and analysis of samples taken from participating farms to ensure they are free from harmful substances and pesticide residues. This quality control measure aims to guarantee the safety and integrity of the dates sold at the exhibition, enhancing consumer trust in locally produced date products.

The Souq Waqif Local Dates Exhibition plays a vital role in supporting the local agricultural community and fostering a sense of pride in Qatari products. By providing a platform for farmers to showcase their products and interact directly with consumers, the exhibition contributes to the sustainability and growth of the date industry in Qatar. The event also helps raise awareness about the nutritional and economic benefits of dates, encouraging more people to incorporate this versatile and nutrient-rich fruit into their diet.

As Qatar continues to prioritize food security and self-sufficiency, events like the Souq Waqif Local Dates Exhibition play a crucial role in promoting local agriculture and showcasing the country’s rich agricultural heritage. The exhibition not only offers a unique shopping experience for visitors but also supports the growth of local farms and strengthens the bond between producers and consumers. With its commitment to quality, sustainability, and community engagement, the exhibition is set to further elevate Qatar’s position as a leader in agricultural innovation and local production.
