The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar is taking steps to enhance patient safety through the introduction of a national patient safety event reporting system. Dr. Shimous Mohammad, the Lead of the National Patient Safety Programme at MoPH, stated that the goal of this system is to improve safety and quality of care by identifying patterns, underlying causes, and areas needing improvement. The system will capture patient safety concerns, hazards, and incidents in order to trigger action, facilitate communication, response, learning, and improvement.
Dr. Mohammad explained that the national incident and learning reporting system will enable all healthcare organizations to report incidents that may affect patient safety. This will allow for consistent reporting on a national level, helping to set priorities and focus on improvement initiatives to ensure safety and quality. While the system will initially be for health professionals, there are plans to open it up for the public to report incidents in the future.
There has been significant progress in all areas of patient safety, according to Dr. Mohammad. She emphasized that the healthcare system is complex, and incidents are bound to happen. The recently launched third National Health Strategy includes a pillar focused on patient-centered care and patient experience. This key pillar aims to engage with patients and prioritize their needs, along with addressing other aspects of quality in healthcare.
The second pillar of the third National Health Strategy, titled ‘Excellence in service delivery and patient experience,’ focuses on providers, integrated care, and patient experience. The goal is to build public trust in the quality and consistency of care across the system through the modernization and integration of care delivery. By enhancing patient-centered care and engaging with patient experiences, Qatar aims to elevate the quality of healthcare services and ensure better outcomes for patients.
Overall, the introduction of a national incident and learning reporting system in Qatar is a significant step towards improving patient safety and quality of care. By capturing and analyzing incidents, healthcare providers can identify areas for improvement and take proactive measures to prevent harm to patients. The commitment to patient-centered care and excellence in service delivery outlined in the National Health Strategy underscores Qatar’s dedication to enhancing the healthcare system and prioritizing the needs of patients. Through these efforts, Qatar is working towards creating a safer and more efficient healthcare system for all.
