Doha, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MOI) recently issued a reminder to the general public that smoking is strictly prohibited in metro vehicles, stations, and all forms of public transportation. This warning comes with a potential penalty of a fine ranging from QR1,000 to QR3,000 for those found violating the rules. The MOI emphasized the importance of adhering to Article 17 of Law No. 10 of 2016, which prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces to ensure public safety in metro vehicles.

Qatar stands out as one of the countries where tobacco smoke pollution is almost non-existent due to the absence of tobacco cultivation or manufacturing within its borders. The country has implemented stringent regulations that not only ban smoking in indoor spaces but also prohibit the sale of tobacco products to individuals under the age of 18. Additionally, the sale of these products within a 1km radius of schools, educational institutions, and training centers is strictly forbidden.

To support individuals in quitting the harmful habit of smoking, Qatar has established the HMC’s Tobacco Control Center, a WHO Collaborating Center that offers all the necessary resources and capabilities to assist smokers in overcoming their addiction. Through these initiatives, Qatar aims to create a smoke-free environment and promote public health and well-being by reducing the prevalence of smoking-related illnesses and diseases.

In a continuation of its efforts to combat smoking and promote public health, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior encouraged compliance with the laws and regulations in place to protect individuals from the dangers of tobacco smoke exposure. By enforcing strict penalties for those found violating the smoking ban in metro vehicles and stations, the MOI aims to create a safe and healthy environment for all passengers and commuters using public transportation facilities in the country.

As a country that prioritizes public health and safety, Qatar has taken proactive measures to reduce the harmful effects of smoking on its population. By prohibiting smoking in enclosed public spaces, enforcing age restrictions on the sale of tobacco products, and providing support for individuals looking to quit smoking, Qatar demonstrates its commitment to promoting a smoke-free environment and protecting the well-being of its residents. Through these initiatives, Qatar aims to reduce the prevalence of smoking-related illnesses and diseases, ultimately improving the overall health and quality of life for its citizens.

By raising awareness about the dangers of smoking, implementing strict regulations, and providing resources for smokers to quit, Qatar sets a positive example for other countries looking to address the public health issues associated with tobacco use. Through these efforts, Qatar continues to prioritize the well-being of its population and work towards creating a healthier and safer society for all.
