The Ministry of Transport in Doha, Qatar is working on a project to increase the number of pedestrian crossings from the current 50 to 200 in the coming years. This initiative is aimed at enhancing road safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists. The plan includes the construction of overpasses, underpasses, and crosswalks to provide safe crossings for pedestrians. Director of Land Transport Planning Department, Saleh Saeed Mohammed Al Marri, mentioned that a study is currently underway to update the pedestrian crossing plan and either build new crossings or upgrade existing ones.

In a recent interview with Al Ryan TV, Al Marri stated that the Ministry of Transport has already built 50 crossings in the past few years and the study is expected to increase the number to over 200 in the next few years. The focus of the study is on improving safety measures for non-motorists, such as cyclists and pedestrians. Al Marri emphasized that the project aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Ministry’s strategy to build a safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable transportation system.

The Transportation Master Plan for Qatar 2050 highlights the importance of factors like sustainability, reducing emissions, and promoting the use of eco-friendly energy in the transportation sector. Al Marri mentioned that the plan aims to reduce accidents and travel time while implementing initiatives such as the use of EURO5-equivalent diesel fuel and electric buses to minimize the impact of transportation on health and safety. The Ministry’s goal is to transition Qatar’s public transport bus system to a 100% electric fleet by 2030, with the current operating rate of electric buses already exceeding 70%.

The Transportation Master Plan 2050 serves as a roadmap for investing in land transport and developing transportation networks across Qatar to meet the future demand for transportation. Sustainability is a key focus of the plan, as it plays a crucial role in economic and environmental development by balancing the needs of economic growth with environmental protection. The plan also emphasizes the integration of transportation networks with urban development and population growth to ensure a well-connected and efficient transportation system for the country.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Transport in Qatar is committed to enhancing road safety and promoting sustainable transportation through the expansion of pedestrian crossings and the electrification of the public transport bus fleet. The initiatives outlined in the Transportation Master Plan 2050 reflect Qatar’s vision for a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation system that supports economic growth while protecting the environment. As the country continues to develop its transportation networks, the focus on sustainability and safety will remain a top priority for the Ministry of Transport.
