Ministry of Public Health hosts seminar on antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to global health security, prompting the Ministry of Public Health in Qatar to host a public health seminar focusing on this pressing issue. The seminar was held under the framework of the Healthy Cities initiative, which aims to address global health challenges through multi-sectoral collaboration. Dr. Salih Al Marri stressed the importance of developing innovative solutions and strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and safeguard public health.

The seminar featured two distinguished speakers, including Dr. Rana Hajjeh from the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region, who highlighted the critical role played by Qatar in implementing ‘One Health’ approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance. Following Dr. Hajjeh’s opening speech, Lord Ara Darzi presented the Fleming Centre’s Initiative to scale up solutions in combating antimicrobial resistance, emphasizing the urgent need to address this growing threat to health security.

Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Hamad Medical Corporation, presented on Qatar’s response to antimicrobial resistance, stressing the importance of adopting a ‘One Health’ approach that involves collaboration among various sectors such as human health, animal health, food production, agriculture, and the environment. Dr. Al Khal emphasized the need for increased public awareness and active engagement to ensure the success of the national response to antimicrobial resistance.

The seminar aimed to increase awareness and catalyze concrete actions to combat antimicrobial resistance at both the international and national levels. By fostering dialogue and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, the Ministry of Public Health aims to develop innovative solutions and strategies to address this urgent public health threat. The seminar highlighted the importance of taking a multi-sectoral approach to combat antimicrobial resistance, involving collaboration across various sectors and increasing public awareness to ensure the success of the national response.
