Staying safe and healthy during the scorching summer months in Qatar is of utmost importance, as the temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius. The government has taken several proactive measures to protect people from heat-related illnesses both indoors and outdoors, in addition to raising awareness through social media platforms. The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and the Ministry of Labour (MoL) have joined forces to educate the public on heat stress and how to safeguard against it.

With the Qatar Meteorology Department predicting a further increase in temperatures in the coming days, the MoPH and MoL have issued guidelines on managing heat stress. The MoL has shared tips on dealing with heat stress at work, such as drinking cool water regularly, taking more frequent breaks, and consuming light and nutritious meals. Meanwhile, the MoPH has emphasized the importance of monitoring urine color as a sign of proper hydration. Dark yellow urine indicates dehydration, while pale urine signifies adequate hydration.

To prevent heat stress among outdoor workers, the government has imposed a ban on work in open spaces from 10am to 3.30pm during the summer months. This ban, enforced through Ministerial Resolution No. 17 of 2021, aims to protect workers from the harmful effects of extreme heat. Additionally, medical experts advise individuals to stay hydrated by drinking water, juices, coconut water, and hydrating fruits to replenish lost fluids due to perspiration.

During hot weather, it is crucial to avoid caffeine and nicotine, as they can elevate core body temperature and cause excessive sweating. Opting for cool beverages like coconut water, lemon water, and fruit juices can help maintain hydration levels. Moreover, consuming light, freshly cooked meals and avoiding processed and salty foods can prevent overheating and discomfort. Cooling down by soaking feet in cool water, wearing wet socks, and wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothing can help regulate body temperature and prevent excessive sweating.

While taking a cold shower may seem appealing in hot weather, it can actually make you feel hotter as your body works harder to warm up again. Lukewarm water is recommended to cool the bloodstream and lower body temperature effectively. By following these simple guidelines and precautions, individuals can stay safe, healthy, and comfortable during the scorching summer months in Qatar.
