The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) in Doha recently held an introductory meeting for students who will be participating in the first Summer Environmental Club programme. Taking place from June 30 to July 18, 2024, the program aims to educate and raise awareness among young individuals about environmental sustainability and the Qatari environment. The Director of the Public Relations and Communications Department at MoECC, Mohammed Ahmed Al Dhahi, emphasized the importance of creating a new generation of environmental pioneers who understand the significance of environmental protection.

The group of 20 students participating in the program will undergo a 15-day course designed to enhance their environmental knowledge and skills. The schedule includes various workshops, lectures, and field trips led by experts from the Ministry. Through these activities, participants will learn about the components of the Qatari environment, local plants and animals, as well as the objectives of sustainable environmental development outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030. The program aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and tools to engage in environmental initiatives within their communities.

One of the key focuses of the programme is to raise awareness about recycling processes and their contribution to environmental sustainability. Participants will also be introduced to the biodiversity of the Qatari environment, its role in ecosystem preservation, and the state’s efforts to protect and enrich it. By engaging in interactive activities and workshops, students will gain a deeper understanding of local environmental issues and how they can actively participate in ongoing environmental initiatives.

In addition to workshops and lectures, the program will include visits to various locations such as the Qur’anic Botanical Garden at Qatar Foundation, the Qatar National Museum, MoECC laboratories, and the research vessel Janan. These trips are designed to provide participants with hands-on experience and practical knowledge about environmental conservation and preservation. By exploring different facets of the Qatari environment, students will develop a greater appreciation for nature and the importance of protecting it for future generations.

The Summer Environmental Club programme underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a culture of environmental awareness and sustainability among all segments of Qatari society. By educating young individuals and empowering them to become environmental advocates, the initiative aims to create a lasting impact on the country’s environmental landscape. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical experiences, participants in the program will be equipped with the tools and resources needed to contribute to environmental conservation efforts in Qatar.

Overall, the Summer Environmental Club programme serves as a platform for nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders in Qatar. By instilling in students a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the environment, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change hopes to inspire a wave of positive change that will benefit not only the current generation but also future ones. Through education, advocacy, and hands-on experiences, the program aims to shape a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society in Qatar.
