MATAR, the Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management, has made significant strides in environmental sustainability by achieving the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for Hamad International Airport’s Central Concourse, which houses the indoor tropical garden known as ORCHARD. This certification highlights the airport’s dedication to sustainability and environmentally responsible construction practices.

The LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and is one of the most widely used green building rating systems. Buildings that receive this certification must meet strict environmental standards across various parameters, including energy efficiency, water usage, air quality, and material selection. By attaining the LEED Gold certification, Hamad International Airport demonstrates its commitment to integrating the highest environmental standards into its operations, ensuring long-term efficiency, cost savings, and a positive environmental impact.

The Central Concourse, where ORCHARD is located, was part of Phase A of Hamad International Airport’s expansion plan and was designed to use 30% less energy and 55% less overall water usage. By implementing sustainable best practices, the central concourse at Hamad International Airport joins a select group of airport terminals worldwide that have achieved similar certifications from LEED. This recognition reflects the airport’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and address climate change through continuous enhancements to its environmental performance.

Since its inauguration in 2014, Hamad International Airport has been committed to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. The LEED Certificate serves as a testament to the airport’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and maximizing resource efficiency. Through innovative initiatives aimed at minimizing waste, the airport continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and setting a positive example for other airports around the world.

In achieving the LEED Gold Certification for the Central Concourse, Hamad International Airport further solidifies its position as a leader in environmental sustainability within the aviation industry. By prioritizing energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable practices, the airport is paving the way for a more environmentally conscious approach to airport operations. This recognition underscores the airport’s ongoing commitment to minimizing its environmental footprint and promoting a greener future for air travel.

As Hamad International Airport continues to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility, it sets a high standard for other airports to follow. By achieving the LEED Gold Certification and implementing sustainable best practices, the airport demonstrates its commitment to reducing emissions, conserving resources, and promoting a healthier environment for passengers, employees, and the community. In the face of climate change and environmental challenges, Hamad International Airport serves as a model for how airports can lead the way in sustainability and make a positive impact on the planet.
