The Fourth Arab Mathematics Olympiad 2024 has officially started in Doha, Qatar, and is set to conclude on November 14. The event is organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar, in collaboration with the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science. The Minister of Education and Higher Education, HE Buthaina Bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, highlighted the importance of the Olympiad in promoting communication among Arab students, fostering excellence, creativity, and self-confidence, as well as enhancing the study and teaching of mathematics.
In her opening speech, HE Buthaina Bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi emphasized the significance of mathematics as a fundamental science that underpins many applied sciences. She stressed the need for improving educational curricula and teaching methods to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. The Arab Mathematics Olympiad aims to boost the performance of Arab students in modern sciences, creating a solid foundation for nurturing talented individuals and enhancing scientific capabilities across Arab countries. The competition serves as a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and preparation for the International Mathematics Olympiad.
HE Buthaina Bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi highlighted the positive impact of students’ success in mathematics competitions on their countries, contributing to advancements in science, research, and innovation. She expressed gratitude to all parties involved in organizing the Olympiad and expressed hopes for its success in achieving its objectives. The ALECSO Director-General, HE Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, commended Qatar’s support for joint Arab initiatives and its collaboration with ALECSO in hosting the event. ALECSO has been dedicated to promoting education and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, working closely with Arab countries to enhance educational opportunities and outcomes.
The Arab Mathematics Olympiad provides extracurricular challenges to enhance mathematical skills among Arab students, fostering analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities since its establishment in 2018. The President of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), Dr. Gregor Dolinar, recognized the event’s importance in showcasing the talents of smart Arab students in the era of artificial intelligence. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s Director of Educational Guidance Department, Maryam Noman Al Emadi, revealed that around 80 to 100 male and female students would be participating in the Olympiad, with associated events and a closing award ceremony planned.
Al Emadi praised Qatar’s hosting of the event as a significant achievement, enabling Qatari students to learn about other Arab cultures and enhance their scientific knowledge. The biennial Arab Mathematics Olympiad is part of Qatar’s efforts to elevate students’ scientific capabilities, prepare them for regional and international competitions, and promote collaboration and positive relationships among Arab students. The event serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their mathematical skills and represent their countries with pride and excellence.
