The Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, in collaboration with various organizations, recently hosted a side event titled “Education to Combat the Climate Crisis” during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This event underscored the critical role of education in addressing the climate emergency and empowering youth to lead climate action in their communities. The annual HLPF meeting serves as a platform for reviewing the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and this year’s theme focused on reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises.

During the event, distinguished speakers discussed how education can mitigate the impacts of climate change by fostering resilience and empowering communities with sustainable solutions. Panelists emphasized the intersections of education, environmental protection, and sustainable employment, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to climate challenges. The session also emphasized the importance of educational interventions in areas facing severe environmental and climate challenges to support the building of stable and inclusive societies. EAA reaffirmed its commitment to quality education as a crucial lever for sustainable development and peace.

The panelists at the event included representatives from UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, UNDP, the Green Climate Fund, and the Qatar Fund for Development, among others. They shared insights on how education can play a significant role in addressing global environmental challenges and empowering communities to take action against climate change. The speakers highlighted the need for transformative education strategies that can mitigate climate risks, build resilience, and catalyze innovative approaches towards more sustainable educational and environmental outcomes.

Maleiha Malik, EAA’s PEIC Executive Director, emphasized the importance of recognizing the vital role of education in combating climate change. She urged the global community to support efforts towards integrating educational strategies with climate action plans and empowering young people, especially those who have experienced the impacts of climate change, to take action for present and future generations. The event marked a significant step towards future initiatives and partnerships aimed at promoting climate-resilient education and environmental outcomes.
