The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in collaboration with the Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), recently organized the Third Qatar Diabetes and Obesity Research Symposium in Doha, Qatar. This symposium was held in conjunction with the eighth annual Qatar Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Conference (QDEM-8), providing a collaborative experience for all participants. The event focused on three key themes: Type 1 Diabetes, Obesity, and New Discoveries, showcasing Qatar’s commitment to advancing screening, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and potential decline of diabetes and obesity in the country. The symposium featured innovative contributions from young researchers from various Qatari academic and healthcare organizations, as well as groundbreaking research findings.

The symposium attracted over 500 attendees who participated in person, with an additional 500 engaging online. During his opening address, Dr. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention Programmes at the Ministry of Public Health, highlighted the urgent global threats posed by diabetes and obesity, emphasizing their impact on both individuals and the healthcare system in Qatar. He praised the symposium for facilitating discussions with local and international experts, sharing groundbreaking insights and research. Prof Shahrad Taheri, Chair of the Research Sub-Committee of the National Diabetes Committee, emphasized the significant role of Qatar’s research in addressing global diabetes and obesity challenges.

The symposium provided a platform for researchers to present their latest findings and collaborate on strategies to combat diabetes and obesity. Presenters discussed the latest advancements in screening, diagnosis, and treatment options for both conditions, as well as potential solutions to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and obesity in Qatar. The event highlighted the importance of proactive measures in addressing these metabolic conditions and emphasized the need for continued research and collaboration among local and international experts.

Attendees at the symposium had the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field of diabetes and obesity research, as well as network with peers and colleagues from around the world. The event also featured workshops and panel discussions on a variety of topics related to diabetes and obesity, providing participants with valuable insights and practical tools to take back to their own organizations. Overall, the symposium was a successful collaboration between the Ministry of Public Health, the Qatar Metabolic Institute, and Hamad Medical Corporation, showcasing Qatar’s commitment to addressing the challenges of diabetes and obesity through research and innovation.
