In Qatar, the Qatari Media Centre of the Ministry of Culture recently organized a panel discussion at the 33rd Doha International Book Fair (DIBF) focusing on the role of digital media in encouraging youth to read. The panel featured journalist Dr. Abdullah Faraj, linguist Dr. Ahmed Al Janabi, and Assistant Professor of Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Qatar University Dr. Mohsen Al Afranji. During the discussion, Dr. Faraj highlighted the importance of reading in preparing the new generation and discussed the decline in reading printed books in today’s digital age. He emphasized that digital media has the potential to create a generation of readers due to its widespread use among young people.

Dr. Al Janabi stressed the need for educators, intellectuals, and content makers to possess the necessary skills to foster a reading culture among the youth. He mentioned the opportunity to leverage digital advancements to steer young people towards reading despite the abundance of other content available on digital platforms. Dr. Al Afranji added that the media continues to have a significant impact on society and leadership, emphasizing the pivotal role of digital media in guiding young people towards reading. He urged publishing houses to utilize the characteristics of digital media to promote cognitive content effectively.

In addition to the panel discussion, a workshop on effective communication skills was conducted by trainer Manar Al Kahlot as part of the DIBF activities. The workshop focused on the importance of effective communication in the present era, highlighting its significance for individuals to navigate interpersonal relationships successfully. Al Kahlot underscored the necessity for current generations to acquire these skills amidst rapid technological advancements, emphasizing that they are skills that are continuously developed throughout life. She emphasized that training and development are key components of enhancing communication skills.

During the workshop, Al Kahlot delved into various types of effective communication, including written and visual communication, which individuals encounter in their daily lives. These communication skills are essential for effective interaction and expression, especially in a digital age where communication occurs through various mediums. The workshop aimed to equip participants with the tools and techniques needed to communicate effectively and navigate the complexities of modern communication methods. By understanding the nuances of different forms of communication, individuals can enhance their ability to connect with others and convey their messages clearly.

The discussion and workshop at the Doha International Book Fair shed light on the evolving role of digital media in promoting reading among youth and the importance of effective communication skills in today’s fast-paced environment. By leveraging digital media platforms and honing communication abilities, individuals can enhance their engagement with others and cultivate a culture of reading. These initiatives underscore the significance of adapting to changing technological landscapes and equipping individuals with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. As society continues to evolve, the ability to communicate effectively and engage with diverse forms of media becomes paramount in fostering a generation of informed and empowered individuals.
