DIBF launches with more than 180,000 titles from 42 countries

The 33rd Doha International Book Fair was inaugurated by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. The theme of this year’s fair is “Knowledge Builds Civilizations,” and it will run until May 18. The event was attended by Minister of Culture H E Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani and Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Sultanate of Oman H H Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, among other dignitaries.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs visited the exhibition pavilions and explored the offerings of Qatari, Arab, and foreign exhibitors. The fair showcases over 180,000 new titles from 515 publishing houses representing 42 countries. Oman is the guest of honour for this edition, presenting a special pavilion that highlights Omani heritage and cultural production. The event also features a dedicated children’s area with various workshops and activities.

Minister of Transport, H E Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, praised the continuous development of the book fair in terms of participation, organization, and creativity. He emphasized the importance of the fair in strengthening Qatar’s cultural standing on both the Arab and international levels. Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, H E Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa Al Hassan Al Mohannadi, highlighted Qatar’s commitment to culture, creativity, and the advancement of knowledge through the fair.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture in Oman, H E Sayyed Saeed bin Sultan Al Busaidi, emphasized the strong cultural ties between Qatar and Oman, noting the longstanding collaboration between the two countries. The selection of Oman as the guest of honour is seen as a testament to the deep cultural connection and cooperation between the two nations. Overall, the fair has garnered admiration from various officials, ministers, and attendees for its role in promoting culture and knowledge exchange.

The Doha International Book Fair serves as a platform for cultural exchange and showcasing the latest publications and books from around the world. With a focus on knowledge as the foundation of civilizations, the event offers a diverse cultural programme that celebrates the rich heritage and intellectual contributions of participating countries. Through exhibitions, workshops, and performances, the fair aims to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds in the exploration of literature and ideas.
