The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is currently accepting applications for its Series Lab until June 1, aimed at emerging screenwriters looking to develop scripted and documentary series projects for various platforms. The programme offers participants scriptwriting tools and industry access to help advance their projects and careers, providing opportunities to complete treatments/scripts, create project presentations, enhance writing and pitching skills, and gain insight into the global series landscape. Mentors and story editors will guide participants through idea generation and material structuring, with sessions focused on individual advising, group work, writer room simulations, tutorials with industry experts, pitch training, and final project presentations.
The Series Lab consists of three sessions lasting six full days each, all held online. Session 1 will focus on idea pitching, feedback, character and theme development, and an overview of necessary documentation for future sessions. Session 2 will involve reviews of updated materials, scene breakdowns, character documents, and initial drafts. The final session will include feedback on first drafts and scene analysis, laying the groundwork for project development in terms of finance and casting. The programme culminates with a final project presentation to an external panel of industry guests, with participants submitting written work and presenting their projects worked on over the three sessions.
Interested applicants can apply via DFI’s website, with a lab fee of QR1,800. The Series Lab aims to provide emerging screenwriters and writer-directors from the region with the opportunity to develop their skills and projects, connecting them with experienced mentors and industry professionals to enhance their understanding of the series creation process. The programme is designed to support participants in creating strong, marketable series scripts that can be distributed across various platforms, including television, digital, and web. By offering a comprehensive and interactive learning experience, the Series Lab aims to empower emerging talents in the region to pursue successful careers in the film and television industry.
