The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ in Doha, Qatar has announced the start of construction on a stormwater drainage tunnel as part of the Critical Asset Resilience Programme (CARP) to protect vital assets in the Flood Prevention Scheme – Phase 3 (Doha South). The project aims to safeguard key areas in Doha South from the negative effects of rainwater accumulation, including the intersection of Mohammed bin Thani Street and Ahmed bin Ali Street, Hamad Hospital tunnel, and government facilities such as the Ministry of Interior, the Shura Council, and the Fire Station Museum.

One of the main objectives of this project is to align with sustainable development goals and the Qatar National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change by providing a lasting solution to reduce rainwater accumulation in the targeted areas without the need for temporary pumps during the rainy season. This initiative is expected to enhance road safety and protect public and private assets in Doha South, according to Eng. Khalid Saif Al Khayareen, Manager of the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal.

The construction of the stormwater drainage tunnel involves building a tunnel with a length of approximately 1.7 km and a diameter of 1,400 mm. Excavation work will be carried out at depths of 7 to 10 meters below ground level using a tunnel boring machine to minimize disruption to traffic flow and nearby residents and institutions. The project is projected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2024.

By implementing this infrastructure project, Ashghal is not only addressing immediate flooding concerns but also contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of Doha’s infrastructure. The tunnel will play a crucial role in protecting critical assets and ensuring the smooth functioning of essential services during severe weather events. Additionally, the project showcases Qatar’s commitment to environmental stewardship and climate change mitigation efforts.

As part of the larger Flood Prevention Scheme – Phase 3 (Doha South), the stormwater drainage tunnel project underscores Ashghal’s dedication to enhancing the resilience of Qatar’s infrastructure and minimizing risks associated with extreme weather events. By prioritizing the protection of key areas and assets in Doha South, the Authority is working towards creating a safer and more sustainable environment for residents and businesses in the region.

Overall, the construction of the stormwater drainage tunnel in Doha South represents a significant step towards fortifying the city’s infrastructure against the impacts of climate change and ensuring the long-term safety and stability of vital assets. Through strategic initiatives like the Critical Asset Resilience Programme (CARP), Ashghal is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development and proactive risk management to secure a prosperous future for Qatar’s residents.
